Ed Helms blew Whoopi Goldberg‘s mind on this morning’s episode of The View after she asked how his missing tooth in The Hangover looked so real — and according to the actor, it’s because he actually is missing a tooth there.
Helms, who starred in the 2009 comedy as well as its two sequels, explained to the panel that he “never had an adult tooth come into that spot” — which made it easy to shoot when it came time for his character to mysteriously lose a tooth after a drunken night in Las Vegas.
“When we were in pre-production for The Hangover and the director was like, ‘How are we gonna do this missing tooth?’ I said, ‘Well, I have an implant there. Let’s just talk to my dentist,'” he recalled. “And [the dentist] said, ‘Yeah, we can just take it out.’ [We took] out the implant.”
Helms continued, “I had a flipper with a tooth on it for the scenes where I had the tooth. And then, yeah, I just was toothless.”
When Goldberg reiterated that she “couldn’t figure out” how they did it, Helms joked, “Whoopi, I don’t mess around. I am committed. I get in there. I will remove body parts. Whatever it takes. I’m in.”

Little did we know, Helms was also missing the tooth when he was filming The Office.
“I didn’t tell The Office production that I had taken my tooth out,” he admitted. “I also couldn’t speak very well with the flipper in and that week, I was shooting a scene where Andy Bernard is drunk, so it was perfect. It was so perfect.”
As for whether he’d make an appearance in a spinoff of the hit sitcom — which creator Greg Daniels recently expressed interest in — Helms said he would do anything he is asked to be a part of.
“I don’t know what that spinoff is or what world it takes place in,” he told the co-hosts. “All I can say is Greg Daniels is a genius. I love him dearly. And I will do anything that he asks.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
