‘The Buccaneers’
Edith Wharton’s The Buccaneers is one of the great unfinished novels in literary history and Apple TV+ is taking the most delicious liberties in adapting it for the small screen. The series — full of breezy humor, hunky English lords, and modern needledrops — follows five Gilded Age American heiresses as they pursue romance across the pond. While the electric Conchita Closson (Alisha Boe) soon finds her light stifled by her British husband’s stiff upper-lipped family, sweet free spirit Nan St. George (Kristine Froseth) finds herself in the middle of an incredible love triangle. While Nan has to choose between the dreamy Theo, Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers) and his charismatic best friend Guy Thwaite (Matthew Broome), Nan’s sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) and best friends Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag) and Mabel (Josie Totah) also find themselves navigating the squalls of first loves in a strange, cold, magical place. While The Buccaneers is sure to get purists sneering, it is nonetheless a perfect period soap opera that will have you squealing and swooning in equal measure.
