The Last of Us

Powered by Reelgood

It’s a new year which means it’s time for new TV. Whether we’re talking about returning favorites like Ted Lasso or Succession, or brand new series to dive into like HBO‘s The Last of Us or Netflix‘s The Three-Body Problem, 2023 already promises to be a banner year for streaming on ye olde boob tube. So much so, we at Team Decider found it tricky to narrow it down to just 23 shows we’re hyped to watch in 2023. Our list includes everything from reality and romance to superheroes and sci-fi. What 2023 show will become your favorite of the new year?

2023 TV kicks off as early as this Friday, with the return of RuPaul’s Drag Race on new network MTV. January 2023 will also mark the premiere of hotly anticipated new shows like the aforementioned The Last of Us and Rian Johnson’s newest mystery caper, Poker Face, on Peacock. However, the new TV year really takes off in March. We already know that The Mandalorian Season 3, Daisy Jones and the Six, Yellowjackets Season 2, and Sanditon Season 3 will all premiere that month.

After that, it’s a smorgasbord of rumors and guess work. We know that Succession is returning this spring and The Witcher this summer, but after that, all we know really is a lot of great shows are coming to us sometime over the course of 2023. From Bridgerton Season 3 to The Bear Season 2, here are the 23 shows Team Decider is most hyped about in 2023…

1

'RuPaul's Drag Race' Season 15

Why We’re Hyped: Every season of Drag Race proudly proclaims to be the biggest ever, but Season 15 ain’t lying. Along with a move from VH1 to MTV, this season has the biggest cash prize in the show’s herstory ($200,000), a new recurring judge in the iconic Ts Madison, and the largest cast of queens ever. And with the show’s 200th episode popping up halfway through the season, you know Drag Race has more surprises in store for the fans. — Brett White

'The Last of Us'

THE LAST OF US HBO TEASER
Photo: HBO

Release Date: January 15, 2023
Streaming Service: HBO Max
Cast: Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv
Why We’re Hyped: The Last of Us and its sequel are two of the most beloved video games ever made because of of their perfect, heartbreaking storytelling. The HBO adaptation is being brought to life by Craig Mazen, the man behind another devastating show about a disaster, Chernobyl, and more importantly is enlisted two of Game of Thrones’s most beloved alums, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. This has all the ingredients of a bonafide HBO banger.

3

'Poker Face'

Poker Face
Photo: Peacock

Release Date: January 26, 2023
Streaming Service: Peacock
Cast: Natasha Lyonne, Dascha Polanco, Adrien Brody, Chloë Sevigny
Why We’re Hyped: Knives Out mastermind Rian Johnson is teaming up with Russian Doll star Natasha Lyonne to reinvent the detective drama. Lyonne plays Charlie, a “scrappy protagonist” with the ability to tell when someone is lying. Poker Face will follow Charlie as she embarks on a cross-country trip that pulls her into a series of complex mysteries to solve. Joining Lyonne is an all-star cast of movie stars, character actors, and up-and-coming talent. If Benoit Blanc is Johnson’s Poirot, will Charle be his Miss Marple??

'The Mandalorian' Season 3

Photo: Disney+

Release Date: March 1, 2023
Streaming Service: Disney+
Cast: Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers, Katee Sackhoff
Why We’re Hyped: Because we miss Baby Yoda, damn it!!! But seriously, the best part of Disney+’s lackluster The Book of Boba Fest was the standalone episode that followed Mando (Pedro Pascal) as he grappled with his choice to leave Grogu with Luke Skywalker (an AI nightmare). Now that our favorite Lone Wolf and Cub duo are reunited, we can’t wait to see what corners of the Star Wars universe they’ll explore next.

5

'Daisy Jones and the Six'

Release Date: March 3, 2023
Streaming Service: Prime Video
Cast: Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse, Camila Morrone
Why We’re Hyped: Taylor Jenkins Reid’s juicy book about a fictional ‘70s band is one of the best reads of the last few years and Amazon is giving it the glittery, glamorous, romantic adaptation it deserves. Indie-darling Riley Keough is set to finally channel her grandfather — Elvis — as rock star Daisy Jones. She’s an it-girl who helps propel a long-toiling band to legend status when she joins their ranks. However, Daisy doesn’t just shake up The Six’s sound. She also changes the internal chemistry of the group as she spars with (and secretly pines after) lead singer Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin).

6

'Sanditon'

Photo: PBS

Release Date: March 19, 2023
Streaming Service: PBS
Cast: Rose Williams, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Crystal Clarke, Cai Bridgen
Why We’re Hyped: The third and final season of Sanditon will be bittersweet for fans to watch when it premieres on Masterpiece on PBS in March. For years now, we’ve watched Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) navigate the highs and lows of romance. Season 3 will start with Charlotte engaged to a local farmer (Cai Bridgen), but does her Season 2 love interest Alexander Colbourne still have a chance to win her heart? Will Sanditon officially end with a happy ending or will the show continue its reputation for tearing fans’ hearts out?

7

'Yellowjackets' Season 2

yellowjackets-finale-group-shot
Photo: Showtime

Release Date: March 24, 2023
Streaming Service: Showtime
Cast: Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci
Why We’re Hyped: Yellowjackets became a cultural phenomenon last winter with its winning blend of dark humor, ‘90s nostalgia, and bone-chilling murder mystery. In Season 2, we’re set to meet the adult versions of two of the show’s most beloved teen characters: Van and Lottie. Early sneak peeks of Lauren Ambrose’s grown up Van suggest that Taissa’s old flame still has a lot of fight in her and we’re (metaphorically) dying to meet Simone Kessell’s adult cult leader Lottie Matthews.

8

'Succession' Season 4

SUCCESSION S3 FINALE RECAP
Photo: HBO Max

Release Date: Spring 2023
Streaming Service: HBO Max
Cast: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Matthew Macfadyen
Why We’re Hyped: Succession’s first three seasons pulled us into the vicious soap opera of the Roy family and left us hanging on quite the wild cliffhanger. Siblings Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), and Roman (Kieran Culkin) finally banded together to take their father down, only to be outmaneuvered by the people they trusted most. What’s going to happen next? Can anyone take Logan Roy (Brian Cox) down? And what wild meme-worthy lines of dialogue will Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Cousin Greg (Nicholas Bruan) hurl at each other next?

9

'Justified: City Primeval'

justified-td
Everett Collection

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: FX
Cast: Timothy Olyphant, Aunjanue Ellis, Boyd Holbrook, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis Hall, Marin Ireland, Ravi Patel, Victor Williams, Norbert Leo Butz
Why We’re Hyped: After a true chef’s kiss of a series finale (“we dug coal together”), FX’s Justified is returning for a hotly anticipated limited series. Inspired by Elmore Leonard’s City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, the next iteration of the silky smooth neo-Western crime drama reunites fans with charismatic U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), who finds himself in Detroit tracking down a violent sociopath who’s eluded authorities. Raylan Givens is the role Timothy Olyphant was born to play, and we can’t wait to revisit this modern television classic. — Josh Sorokach

10

'Secret Invasion'

Photo: Disney+

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: Disney+
Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Emilia Clarke, Martin Freeman
Why We’re Hyped: Most of the MCU’s offerings in the last year or so have been standalone stories about new heroes coming into their own or our old faves dealing with the fallout of Avengers: Endgame. Secret Invasion looks to finally push the narrative forward. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) will have to grapple with his own decisions to partner with the Skrulls and the revelation that maybe not all the shape-shifting aliens come in peace. Add a star-studded new cast of characters to the MCU, and we’re extremely curious to see how this classic comic storyline plays out on screen.

11

BEEF

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Steven Yeun, Ali Wong
Why We’re Hyped: This dark A24 comedy will follow what happens in the aftermath of a road rage incident between Danny (Steven Yeun) and Amy (Ali Wong). Netflix has been understandably tight-lipped on this high profile series, but the combination of Yeun, Wong, A24, and Tuca & Bertie alum Lee Sung Jin has us craving whatever BEEF is serving.

12

'Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story'

queen-charlotte-bridgerton
Photo: Netflix

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Golda Rosheuvel, India Amarteifio, Adjoa Andoh, Cory Mylchreest
Why We’re Hyped: Spin-offs are always tricky to pull off, but as soon as Netflix revealed the young Queen Charlotte’s adorable meet cute with future husband King George IV last year, we were in love with this concept. This prequel series will follow Bridgerton’s grand dames as they recall their own love stories. Foreign-born princess Charlotte will learn to love her King George pre-madness, while younger versions of Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton will navigate a version of the ‘ton without Lady Whistledown’s gossipy missives. Lets just say we want all the bodice-ripping romance we can get in 2023.

13

'Heartstopper' Season 2

Heartstopper-1
Photo: Netflix

Release Date: TBA
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Kit Conner, Joe Locke, Yasmin Finney, Sebastian Croft, William Gao, Olivia Colman
Why We’re Hyped: How can Heartstopper possibly improve on a perfect first season? How about a trip to Paris? Though we don’t have 100% confirmation of the plot of Season 2 of this beautiful teen, gay love story, in Alice Oseman’s graphic novels the school takes a particularly epic, romantic and heart, er, stopping trip to the City of Lights. And while things get darker in the world of Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, the tone of Oseman’s source material is always gentle, and always supportive. — Alex Zalben

14

'Fargo' Season 5

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: FX on Hulu
Cast: Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joe Keery
Why We’re Hyped: Noah Hawley’s Coen Brothers-inspired anthology series is always tense, masterful, and addictive. This time around, Hawley has the likes of Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, Ted Lasso’s Juno Temple, and the great Jennifer Jason Leigh playing in his dark sandbox. Set in 2019 Minnesota, this new season will ask the questions “when is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn’t yours?” Speculate as you will!

15

'Loki' Season 2

sylvie-loki-ep-6
Photo: Disney+

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: Disney+
Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Ke Huy Quan
Why We’re Hyped: Loki is Disney+’s first returning live action MCU series and we’re dying to know what happened to our Loki (Tom Hiddleston) after he faced off against He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors). All we know is that Loki and Sylvie’s (Sophia Di Martino) actions created a new timeline where Kang rules over the TVA. Everything Everywhere All At Once star Ke Huy Quan joins the mayhem in Season 2.

16

'Bridgerton' Season 3

bridgerton-penelope
Photo: Netflix

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, Jonathan Bailey, Simone Ashley
Why We’re Hyped: In just two seasons, Bridgerton has solidified itself as one of our all-time favorite Netflix shows. Each season of the series follows one of the eight Bridgerton siblings as they navigate romance in Regency England. What’s exciting about Season 3 is that for the first time, the show is shuffling up the order of the Julia Quinn books and cutting ahead to third son Colin’s (Luke Newton) romance with Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). Colin has long put Pen in the friend zone, so how will the wallflower (who has been moonlighting this whole time as the acid-quilled Lady Whistledown) manage to catch her long-time crush’s eye?

17

'The Witcher' Season 3

Photo: Netflix

Release Date: Summer 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, Joey Batey
Why We’re Hyped: While The Witcher has already been renewed for Season 4, Season 3 will mark Henry Cavill’s last year with the hit fantasy show. Do we always understand what’s going on in The Witcher? Do we still love to watch Geralt (Henry Cavill) slay monsters, sleep with Yennifer (Anya Chalotra), and grunt through conversations with Ciri (Freya Allan)? Oh yes.

18

'Shōgun'

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: FX on Hulu
Cast: Cosmo Jarvis, Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano
Why We’re Hyped: Along with Noah Hawley’s long-gestating Alien, Shōgun is one of those projects that FX head John Landgraf has been teasing for ages. The big budget epic will follow John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a British sailor who becomes ensnared in Japanese politics after finding himself shipwrecked. The series has the potential to be our next major TV obsession — and it doesn’t hurt that one of the key characters is a female samurai played by Anna Sawai.

19

'The Bear' Season 2

Carmy-in-The-Bear

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: FX on Hulu
Cast: Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliott
Why We’re Hyped: The Bear sneakily became one of the biggest hits of 2022 and devotees are dying for more of the tense, dark, soulful comedy. The series follows a talented fine dining chef as he returns home to manage his family’s struggling beef sandwich shop after his elder brother dies by suicide. In the Season 1 finale, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) not only makes a discovery that changes everything, but decides to close “The Beef” and reopen it as the eponymous “The Bear.” How will the crew assimilate to this new restaurant? And will Syd (Aya Edebiri) and Carmy manage to get through a season without a fight?

20

'Ted Lasso' Season 3

tedlasso
Photo: Everett Collection

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: Apple TV+
Cast: Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Juno Temple
Why We’re Hyped: Ted Lasso became our collective go-to comfort watch in 2020 and 2021, but the series skipped out on us in 2022. To say that we miss Coach Ted Lasso and the rest of the AFC Richmond crew would be an understatement. We’re dying to know what’s going to happen now that Nate (Nick Mohammed) is coaching a rival team and if Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley’s (Juno Temple) romance survived their break. We need more Ted Lasso now!

21

'The Boys' Season 4

the-boys
Photo: Prime Video

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: Prime Video
Cast: Antony Starr, Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty
Why We’re Hyped: Amazon’s darkly sage take on the evils of corporate superhero-ing is one of the most manic and delightful shows on TV. Each season delivers mind-boggling twists, gruesome deaths, and out-there sex scenes…with a heaping dose of social satire. We can’t wait to see where the Prime Video show hits superhero fandom hardest next.

22

'Doctor Who'

Release Date: November
Streaming Service: Disney+, BBC
Cast: David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Ncuti Gatwa, Neil Patrick Harris, Yasmin Finney, Bernard Cribbins
Why We’re Hyped: David Tennant, who played the Tenth Doctor to great acclaim is back — but as the Fourteenth Doctor? And Ncuti Gatwa, who is supposed to be taking over the role, is the Fifteenth Doctor? And Russel T. Davies, who reinvented the franchise back in 2005 has returned as showrunner? And Neil Patrick Harris is in there as some sort of demented toymaker or something? To quote Tennant on his shocking return: What? What? What? We know that the first of three anniversary specials will air in November, and Gatwa will officially take over in 2024. But between then and now, there’s nothing but renewed excitement — and a ton of confusion — about what’s next for Who. Add in a a new deal to stream on Disney+, and this seems like, once again, a brand new era for the TARDIS. — Alex Zalben

23

'The Three-Body Problem'

three-body-problem-eiza-benedict-john
Photos: Getty Images

Release Date: 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Eiza González, Benedict Wong, John Bradley, Jovan Adepo
Why We’re Hyped: Okay, so David Benioff and D.B. Weiss might not be the most popular showrunners in Hollywood after the polarizing series finale of Game of Thrones, but we are incredibly damn curious to see how the pair tackles Cixin Liu’s groundbreaking sci-fi trilogy for Netflix. The cast list suggests that the Chinese-set saga is getting a global adaptation and maybe a few major plot tweaks, to boot. Can Benioff and Weiss capture lightning in a bottle twice and adapt a seemingly “impossible to adapt” genre series yet again?!? We’ll have to wait and see… (Benedict Wong has to be Da Shi, though, right?? RIGHT?!?)
