Fans of elaborate names and more elaborate crimes, we have great news for you. Fargo is coming back for a Season 5. During FX’s session at the Television Critics Association’s 2022 winter tour, it was announced that Noah Hawley would be returning with another installment of his sprawling epic, and this time around, it will be set in 2019.

In addition to creator and executive producer Noah Hawley, Warren Littlefield, Joel and Ethan Coen, and Steve Stark will also be returning to executive produce. “Noah and Warren have delighted and inspired fans through four brilliant chapters of Fargo and we’re thrilled to announce with our partners at MGM a new chapter of what has become one of TV’s best and most acclaimed series,” said Eric Schrier, President of FX Entertainment.

“Noah Hawley is a masterful storyteller who has successfully created four wholly original seasons of one of the most brilliant series on television,” said Michael Wright, President of Scripted Television at MGM. “We cannot wait to see his vision for season five come to life with our partners at FX.”

So what will this new season be about? According to a press release from FX, it will be set in 2019 as it asks “when is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn’t yours?” That’s exactly the sort of cryptic nonsense that makes Fargo oh-so-addicting.

This announcement is big news for a couple of reasons. For one, this is the first season in a while to be set in a more modern time. Though it premiered in 2014, Season 1 was set in the mid-aughts. Season 2 took place in the 1970s; Season 3 took place around 2010, about seven years before its 2017 premiere; and Season 4 took place in the 1950s. Even if it takes a couple of years to make, Season 5 will likely have the shortest time gap between when the series is set and when it premieres. How is that going to affect the tone of this show obsessed with vibes? How will it influence the references?

There’s also a bittersweet reason why this announcement is important. Last summer, Hawley hinted that he would be interested in ending Fargo with Season 5. “I think it would be good to create an ending, and deliberately come to something, knowing it’s the last one and see how one might wrap up this anthology,” Hawley told Vanity Fair.

Whether this is the final installment or the beginning of many more seasons, it’s exciting news. More Fargo is always a good thing.
