The good news is we have an update about the future of Fargo. The bad? It’s bittersweet. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner Noah Hawley confirmed that Fargo will likely be getting a Season 5. But the creator believes this new installment may also be the last.
When asked if there was going to be a Season 5 of that anthology series, Hawley said, “Yeah, I think so. I don’t have it yet. I have pieces that will have to survive. They’re not connected.”
Hawley then discussed the potential of the crime anthology series ending. That’s when the last season news was revealed. “I think it would be good to create an ending, and deliberately come to something, knowing it’s the last one and see how one might wrap up this anthology,” Hawley said.
The ending of Fargo is depressing news, for sure. But it’s something that fans should take with a grain of salt. You need to look no further than Season 4’s history to understand why. Back in 2017 FX president John Landgraf announced that there were no plans for a fourth season of the crime drama. As Chris Rock’s IMDb page can prove, that wasn’t the case after all. Season 4 was announced a year later in August of 2018, and premiered last year in 2020.

So why the change of heart? Both Landgraf and Hawley have repeatedly said that new seasons of Fargo are completely up to Hawley. If he has an idea for a new installment, the creator-focused FX moves ahead with a new season. If he doesn’t, nothing happens. After Season 3 the author and showrunner was convinced he would never revisit this world again. That changed once he came up with the idea of a multi-generational war over who was allowed to be American, an idea which served as the premise for Season 4.
Basically, Fargo could go on for nine more seasons or it could have ended last year. We don’t know. All of those decisions lay at the feet of the very-busy Noah Hawley. For now, Hawley believes that Season 5 will be this award-winning series’ last — but who knows? Fargo has escaped limbo many times before.
